Abel Tasman National Park - January 2003

While the boys were away at a basketball camp, we headed off to the Abel Tasman National Park for 4 days of easy tramping. The hike is about 30 miles, so we only walked about 4 hours each day; the rest of the time was spent lying on the beautiful golden sand beaches and splashing around in the water. We were fortunate to have perfect weather for the first three days - mild and sunny - and only on the last day as we waited for the water taxi to take us back to our starting point did we feel a few raindrops. We took the low impact option, meaning we let the water taxi transfer the backpacks each day from one night's hut to the next. It was a great trip ! Of all the places we've been to in New Zealand, this is the most beautiful. It is also the easiest of the "Great Walks". Another very popular way to explore this area is by kayak, and there are numerous operators who offer organized kayak touring packages. If you come to New Zeland, this is a place to be sure to visit.
